About Sports Massage and Sports Therapy

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in regular physical activity. Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not hardened into bone and cartilage; it includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (a form of connective tissue that lines and ensheathes the other soft tissues). Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

Sports Therapy

Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability.

It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.

What is a Sports Therapist?

A Sports Therapist is a healthcare professional who has the knowledge, skills and ability to:

utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise performance, preparation and injury prevention programmes, provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in a recreational, training & competitive environment, assess, treat and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention. As well as provide appropriate sport and remedial massage in a sport & exercise context

plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes.

Please remember that this form of massage therapy isn't just intended for those who engage in regular activity. I find that the word 'Sports' can be misleading for Sports Massage/Therapists and rest assured, it really can be beneficial to anyone who experiences day to day muscular tension from life in general. 'Sports' massage is known to be a deeper tissue massage, but I will ever only work at a depth that is appropriate for the condition/your particular requirements and I will assess this throughout treatment with you.
